Braskem’s dollar bonds continued to drop sharply, down by 2-3 points across the curve after a part of its rock salt mine in Maceió saw a rupture and crumbled under a lagoon. The mine is said to be on the verge of an imminent collapse. The region’s Civil Defense pointed out that the rate of movement of Mine 18 accelerated to 0.52cm per hour, reaching 12.5cm in a 24-hour period. Since the movement began, the mine has already sunk 2.35m. Given the risk of the mine collapsing completely, the city of Maceio has called a state of emergency and order an evacuation of its 40,000 locals. Braskem was earlier notified of a BRL 1bn ($205mn) civil action lawsuit on potential damages from the imminent collapse of the mine.
